It was coming up to 12 months since our last trip to Moreton Island was postponed on account of gale force winds. Time was running out for the deferral of a paid one way passage on the MiCat. A weekend in March was chosen for the tides and we were joined by Sal and Robyn.
The boats were packed on the grassy bank above what little beach was left at Fisherman's Passage. As soon as Hawkins opened the camping permits were collected and the vehicles left in their secured carpark. You couldn't have asked for a better day. The water was glassy and the tide full as we headed north for the mangrove passage which opened out to a sparkling sea of tranquillity. Mud Island rested quietly on the horizon.
Kylie and Steve joined us for morning tea on the coral banks of Mud Island's NE lagoon. They stayed a little longer after seeing
us off to watch the procession of turtles and fish also leave on the run out tide. I put my sail up more for visibility as it was a variable breeze puffing at most 5 knots, however there were not many boats around either. Circles of water boiled with fish while terns bombed from above.
