The next day we decided to back Murray's opinion and went north
while everyone else went south. We had lunch with a long time workmate of Mark's in Rocky then returned to Kinka Beach Caravan Park. Surveying the rough conditions we hoped that Murray had got it right. Over the next four days we learned not to doubt Murray. You could almost set your watch by his weather predictions - within an hour or two.
Bonza. What a day. No wind. Launching from Kinka Beach we headed for Middle Island with our camping permit for two. That little
tag gave us exclusive camping rights on the island, everyone else had to bugger off. I found the trip over daunting as we had not been here before, there were just the two of us and there was still a bit of energy in the swell. The swell was larger and a slower frequency compared with the relatively short chop of Moreton Bay. It looked like it could get big, very big.
Landing on the NW beach of Middle Island we checked out the designated camping area on this side of the island. It was an exposed site with pandanus offering limited shelter and shade. The ground was rough and had a lot of growth. Heading around the southern end of the island we landed on a gentle sandy beach to visit the NE campsite recommended by the Ranger. Sheltered from the prevailing SE, there was a shady area under casuarinas set back off the beach. Perfect. The VMR had cautioned us that the reception in this location can be impaired at times, and if having difficulty to head up the hill.
